"No body, but he who has felt it, can conceive what a plaguing thing it is to have a man's mind torn asunder by two projects of equal strength, both obstinately pulling in a contrary direction at the same time" , written by British novelist Laurence Sterne. The meaning of this quote is that only a human can understand how it feels to want to do something but is some how compelled to do another. Grant, the author, is in a position where he wants one thing but required to do another. Grant wants to move away with the love of his life but he has to help out a friend in prison.
In the novel Grant plays the role as a miserable school teacher in Louisiana. Grant is one of the people that hates the way that African American people are treated. White people disrespect and think lower of the because of the color of their skin. Grant really wants to be able to leave Louisiana with the one he loves and to never look back. Grant is in love with a beautiful woman named Vivian. Although Vivian is married and has children, it couldn't stop Grant from loving her. Grant can not always see Vivian but when he does, he is the happiest man that he could be. Grant would do anything to be with and love Vivian.Vivian is the only person that could completely change Grants mood. Even though Grant wants to leave Louisiana, Vivian is one of the reason why he stays. She inspires him to do the things that he is compelled to do.
Grant is compelled by his aunt and Miss Emma to stay in town and help out Jefferson. Jefferson was called a hog during the trial and Miss Emma will not allow him to be considered a hog. Grant is forced to go to the prison and speak with Jefferson. Grant's aunt is very bossy and demanding. The only reason that Grant is going to the prison is because his aunt is bossy and he hates to see Miss Emma cry. If it wasn't for Vivian as well Grant would've been stop going to the prison. Grant feels that he can't really make Jefferson change. He thinks that whether he is a hog or man he still will die in an electric chair.
Grant has his wants and one day he will get what he wants but until then he is required to visit Jefferson. Jefferson only has a few more months to live but until then Grant is compelled to stay in Louisiana to help. When Jefferson dies then the only thing stopping Grant from leaving is Vivian. He wants to be with Vivian, he can't fully be with her until she files for a divorce. If Vivian and her husband ever get a divorce then Grant can get what he wants by moving away with the person he loves the most, plus her children. Sometimes we are required to do things that we don't want to do but we have to do them. Once they're compeleted people normally feel good about themselves because they completed a task that they didn't want to do. He may be rewarded by Vivian if he finished.

IF YOU WERE A PARENT, WOULD YOU BUY A DOLL THAT MISREPRESENTED YOUR VALUES?
If I were a parent I wouldn't buy a doll that misrepresented my values. If my child would ask I would deny them to get it. I wouldn't want something i think is bad to empower my child nor be a role model to her. If there is doll that will cause kids to do crazy things to themselves than it shouldn't be sold. Also parents should make sure that their children doesn't feel like that towards a doll. No one should feel like they need to undergo surgery to look like an plastic barbie doll.
Should schools have a vocational track?
Schools should have a vocational track because it's beneficial for students.Learning more is never a bad thing. The vocational track can exceed the knowledge of students about their future careers. They can also have part-time jobs, which can extremely help in college life because of the expenses. The vocational truck may even increase the number of graduates and create better leaders for the future, which is amazing. This is something that can greatly impact teens in this generation in a positive way.
Should handguns be illegal?
I strongly believe that handguns should be illegal because even adults these days do not know how to use hand guns. Lots of crimes subsequently occur due to the misuse of hand guns. There are other things people can use for self-defense. Guns will not always be the answer, and neither is violence. In conclusion hang guns should be illegal because of safety issues in the city.
THE NIKE VICTIM
The "Nike Victim" is a photo of a man with a Nike logo carved into his cheek. The inspiration for the picture shows how will people go to the extremes to follow trends and to be fashionable. Designer labels are getting people obsessed with their creations and this shows that there is a negative side to it and it that makes victims of consumers. Many people like hippies and people who don't believe in material goods would agree with this picture. Of course many people who disagree with the picture would say its exaggerated, like the owners and creators of Nike. I don't see this picture as a persuasive one, it is only exaggerated in my point of view.
