Animal farm
THEME OF POWER
In Animal Farm, the pigs take power after the Rebellion because they claim that they are the most intelligent animals on the farm. Yet it soon becomes clear that intelligence and good intentions need not go hand in hand.
· Are the sheep completely useless? Do we actually need these less intellectual workers to support everyone else?
The sheep are completely useless. Yes we need these less intellectual workers to support everyone else to be bossed around by more intellectual animals.
· While the sheep are extraordinarily inept, do they also have a certain power?
Although the sheep are extraordinarily inept, they do have a certain power which is to be bossed around
THEME OF PRIDE
In Animal Farm, pride serves to unite the animals as a common group; in this way it is something akin to camaraderie. The animals take pride in banding together to overthrow their oppressive leader, and their communal feeling benefits everyone. Yet Napoleon, himself an extremely vain pig, quickly learns how to use the animals’ pride as a tool of manipulation. They are also so proud of their animal-run farm that they are blind to the fact that it is failing and corrupt.
· Is pride beneficial or harmful to the animals? For the pigs? For the humans?
Pride is beneficial to the animals, because it causes them to start a riot which results in the humans being overthrown. Pride is harmful to the pigs because it makes them feel better than the other animals, and causes them to act like the humans did. Pride for the humans is harmful because it results in them being overthrown.
· What do the pigs feel proud of as compared to what the other animals feel proud of?
The pigs feel proud for having superiority, while the other animals are proud of being free.
Quote
“There was enthusiastic cheering and stamping of feet. Napoleon was so gratified that he left his place and came round the table to clink his mug against Mr. Pilkington's before emptying it.” (10.28)
How and why is this quote important to the theme of pride?
These quote is important to the theme of pride because he has so much pride that he believes he is good enough to 'clink his mug' with a human. .

WINDMILLS
Windmills have been around for at least 1,300 years. The first windmills had vertical shafts and were reportedly built in
Persia around the 7th century AD. Made of six to twelve sails covered in fabric or palm leaves, they were used to grind
corn & draw up water. A similar type of vertical shaft windmill can also be found in 13th century China. A windmill is an engine
powered by the wind to produce energy, often contained in a large building as in traditional post mills, smock mills and tower
mills. The energy windmills produce can be used in many ways, traditionally for grinding grain or spices, pumping water, sawing wood or hammering
seeds. Modern wind power machines are used for generating electricity and are more properly called wind turbines. The basic structure of a windmill is
a shaft, two blades, a rotor and a generator. The shaft is a hollow pole that stands up to 20 stories off the ground. They stand that high to catch faster
winds, which have more kinetic energy. The blades can be up to 300 feet wide. The rotor is connected to the blades and activated when they turn. The
rotor is connected to a generator under the shaft. The transfer of energy therefore goes from the blades, to the rotor, down through the shaft to the
generator, and out to transformers. The transformers can then route the electricity to various buildings.
